Reverse lights have stopped working - what can I do?

I have no reverse lights on my 2008 Citroen Xsara Picasso. I have checked the bulbs and the fuse. They are both fine. What else could it be?

The switch on the gearlever or the earth to the reversing light bayonet.

I left the Scenic and the interior light and boot light did not go off as they usually do. I checked the switch and could not switch it off at all. There was nothing wrong with any doors or door closing...
I note your advice to avoid flat batteries by switching off lights and removing the boot light bulb. It may be worth mentioning the bulb in the glove box, if there is one. In 2008, I had a flat battery...
The sidelights on my Vauxhall Zafira come on when the engine is off and the key is out of the car, but when the engine is running the lights are fine and work ok.
