Would you choose the 2008 Toyota Avensis, 2007 Volkswagen Golf or 2007 Volkswagen Passat?

I drive about 20,000 miles each year including about three trips to France, during which time I tow a light caravan for no more than three weeks. I look for economical, reliable and comfortable motoring. For the same price, i.e. about £11,000, I can get a 2008 Toyota Avensis Estate D4D T3X, a 2007 Volkswagen Golf 1.9SE TDI Estate, or a 2007 Passat 1.9SE TDI Estate, all with about 30,000 miles. I carry a bike thus the need for an estate. Have you any thoughts as to which will prove the best long-term buy? I tend to keep my cars for up to five years.

I'd rate the Avensis of all of these on the basis of far fewer problems reported, though they can have a cylinder head problem. See the entries in car by car breakdown on this site.
