Where can I get short-term insurance?

My daughter is leaving the country for a year on 1 September 2010. She has insurance until 12 August, so she contacted her insurer in April asking for the policy to be extended until 31 August. They said they only insure for 12 months, so she wants to cover the short period without taking out a full year and claiming a percentage back, which I am sure would not be pro rata. Any ideas?

You're probably better off getting some short term insurance. Swinton insures for 1-28 days, which might be a better bet as you're only paying for what you use: www.swinton.co.uk/car/shortterm/
