Why's my girlfriend's Nissan Micra accelerator pedal squeaking?

I've noticed for a while that my girlfriend's 2001 Nissan Micra emits a high pitched noise/squeak when you gently press the accelerator. She has just informed me that it's getting worse - the car recently had its airflow sensor changed after it went wrong.

Might be the alternator, might be the water pump. It's chain cam so it cannot be a timing belt bearing.
