Buying a used estate - Audi A4 Avant or BMW 3 Series Touring?

My son would like a "grown up car" he has two small children. He has £15,000. Should he go for a 2008 Audi A4 Avant or BMW 3 Series Touring? Which engine? Automatic preferred but not essential.

Used examples of both can have engine problems whether petrol or diesel. I can't recommend one over the other.
