Can you help repair my Vauxhall Vectra's air conditioning system?

I have a V-reg Vauxhall Vectra 1800cc petrol and have no air conditioning. The compressor did always kick in but no longer does so. Also none of the buttons light up, ie the air conditioning light, snowflake light, and heated rear window. All fuses have been checked and there's no problem there. I did change two air con relay switches but still no luck. I took the car to a garage for a re-gas but they would not do it unless you can hear the compressor kick in. In all fairness they said I would be wasting my money, so the question is, how do I get the air conditioning working again?

It may be nothing more than the electromagnetic clutch to the air conditioning pump. In the UK these are not normally separately replaced. They'd rather sting you £1000 for an entire new pump when all that needs replacing is the clutch, at a cost of around £100.
