Does the Renault Clio have an non-interference engine?

A friend has recently experienced cam belt failure on his 2003 Renault Clio. Obviously he has been quoted a lot of money to fix it and is thinking of scrapping the car.

However, I had a cam belt failure a few years ago on a Ford Orion and was lucky that it didn't cost me a new engine as it was a non interference engine. I even managed to fix it myself with a new cam belt kit, but I can't find out if the Renault is an interference or a non interference engine. Is there any way to tell without taking the thing apart?

Try to turn the engine over from the crank. Use a probe to inspect the combustion chambers.
