How do we arrange transfer of ownership of a car which my nephew will learn to drive in?

My mother-in-law is gifting her 12-year-old Yaris 1.0 to my 23-year-old nephew with no driving experience. She has also recently moved house so need to change details on the V5. The Yaris will only be used as a learner car by my sister-in-law, who will accompany him between lessons. Do we now transfer the vehicle to my nephew, and for insurance purposes to avoid "loading" put it in his name with his mother as named driver? Is there any other solution within the law?

Basically, yes. You transfer keepership to the nephew. You insure the car in his name and you add your sister-in-law and her husband and any other mature people who will occasionally drive the car as named drivers to the policy, as this will reduce the premium. You should also consider a 'black box' telematics insurance. Some links at the end of this directory: www.honestjohn.co.uk/useful-websites/tax-insurance.../
