Which family SUV for commuting and long holiday trips?
In looking to change our car (a 2003 old shape Volvo V40 2.0i turbo Sport Lux). We have been considering the KIA Sportage 1.7 CRDI 2 or Hyundai ix35 due to their economical running costs, reasonable size and long warranties. We are reluctant to part with a large chunk of cash in the current climate and have been offered advice from friends and family that we should spend less money initially and opt for an older Honda CR-V, RAV4 or Nissan X-Trail. We mainly use our car doing the school run and commuting to work on a day to day basis but we do have to take four lots of luggage, a roof box and a canoe or two when we go on holiday. Our annual mileage is up to 12,000 and we need your advice on the best option. Do we go for the nearly new, more expensive KIA or Hyundai, or do we buy an older SUV? As a family we only have one car and so reliability and now economy are paramount.

A Honda CR-V 2.2iCTDI 2007 - 2009 avoids the problems associated with diesel particulate filters fitted to the later 2010 - 2012 CR-V 2.2iDTEC. The 2.2iCTDI does 40 - 42mpg in normal use. I had one for six months, but I have yet to hear of any DPF problems on the Hyundai IX35 and KIA Sportage 1.7CRDI. (Readers will correct me if I’m wrong.) The other option is a new Dacia Duster, of course. From £8995 for a petrol engine and from £11,495 for a diesel, all with a 3-year warranty, extendable to five years for £395.
