Which would you pick from the Volvo V70, Mercedes-Benz C-Class or E-Class and 5 Series BMW?

I need a cheap large family car for general use (Asda trips) and longer road trips with lots of baggage. I only have about £1500 for the purchase. I would prefer a diesel automatic and preferably an estate (not vital though) which seems to cut down my options to the Volvo V70, Mercedes-Benz C- or E-Class and 5 Series BMW, all about the 1999-2001 age. I'd like to give myself the best chance of not buying a load of problems. What would you consider the best?

The cars you've listed - the Volvo V70, Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5-Series are all ideal for your requirements. You might also want to consider the Audi A6 Avant but the real challenge is buying a car which hasn't got a huge mileage on the clock - which cars of this type and age invariably do. Although these cars are generally reliable, like any car - once they get to 120,000 miles things can go wrong and be expensive to fix. Ideally you want to find a car with as low a mileage as possible (if it's only had one or two owners from new that's also a huge plus), a good service history and has been well looked after. We think the 5 Series would be a good bet, but all are worth considering. Essentially, it's about getting the lowest mileage and best condition car for your money.
