Would you recommend a Mercedes-Benz C-Class or E-Class for long-distance comfort?
I have a budget of around £16,000 and would like a car which is comfortable over long distances. I am thinking secondhand. I really want heated leather seats, a cup holder and the capability of doing in excess of 40mpg, and to carry 4 adults- so probably a diesel. I also want to keep it and would like it to be capable of doing many miles and lasting. I have been thinking of a Mercedes-Benz, either C-Class or E-Class - I've been in many as taxis and they seem to be well rated by drivers. However, am I missing something? Are there any other models that I should consider? If Mercedes-Benz, which models would you recommend and are there any years to avoid?

If you want long distance comfort, durability and economy, the Mercedes E-Class is really the ideal car and with a £16,000 budget you can certainly get a good example. For your budget you will struggle to get the latest model but the previous one is still a superbly refined car. The E220 CDI is a good choice and will return 42mpg but the E280 CDI is our choice, as it's got great performance yet economy is still 39mpg. The one other car we'd suggest considering is the latest Volvo S80. Volvo has a reputation for having the most comfortable seats of any car manufacturer and their cars are ideal for long distance cruising. The D5 or 2.4 D are both strong engines (they're actually the same 2.4-litre diesel engine but the D5 has more power). An auto should do around 40mpg.
