Ford Focus or Volvo V40?

We are looking to buy a new family car to replace our aging Ford Focus and have so far narrowed down our choices to the new Focus and the new Volvo V40. The car needs to be big enough to fit our (rather large) pushchair in the boot and also feature all the latest mod cons, like air con, DAB radio and full size spare wheel. The car will mainly be used by my wife, with the annual mileage around 8000 miles. Which would you buy, and should we get a petrol or diesel?

The current model Focus has a particularly small boot, virtually forcing you into the estate version. The Focus 1.0 EcoBoost Econetic is 99g/km CO2, so free tax. If you will sell the car within three years then you probably won't have any problems going for diesel. If you aim to keep the car for six years, go for petrol.
