Speak to insurer or manufacturer after an accident?

I recently bought new Hyundai i30. The manufacturers say if I have an accident claim I should contact their agent in the first instance NOT my insurer (Sainsburys). They will then take over all negotiations with Sainsburys.

I think this could lead to problems with the later claim settlement, renewal etc.
Any views on whether I should follow Hyundai's advice?

Nothing is for nothing. If they are going to "help" you, what are they going to get out of it? Usually a fat commission on an expensive credit hire car while yours is in for an extended period for repair. And if the insurers don't pay for the credit hire car, you are liable for it. That's why it's called 'credit hire'.
