Searching for a second car that's comfortable and economical

We are looking to get a second car and would like some advice on what you'd recommend for us. My husband currently does around 20,000 - 25,000 miles per year and that's split equally between motorway and city driving for his work.

What would you recommend that's comfortable, but economically viable? My husband prefers premium cars.

BMW 320d. I got 63mpg over 7000 miles. Or a smaller 118d. 2.0-litre BMW diesels are the most economical 2.0-litre diesels out there, and for big distances better than any 1.6 diesels too.

I'm in the process of buying a new Ford Mondeo Zetec Business Edition. However, the 16-inch alloys are a no-cost option against the standard fit 17-inch - which is likely to be the better bet?
