Downsizing from a Mercedes C-class - what should I buy?

I want to downsize from my Mercedes-Benz C-Class CDI as I head towards retirement. I want a car that is smaller, but provides me with a similar quality of ride, economy and comfort. My only spec requirements are for an automatic gearbox. What make and models should I consider buying?

A Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost Powershift on 14-inch wheels with 175/65 R16 tyres or 15-inch wheels with 185/55 R15 tyres will do the job. It's the most reliable small car. If you turn your nose up at that, then a Honda Jazz ES CVT-7 also of 15-inch wheels (not 16s), which is more spacious and more versatile.
