Buying a powerful car, but want good MPG - what do you recomment?

I want to buy a powerful car, but want good fuel economy and a comfortable ride. I currently drive a BMW 1 Series, but am fed up with the high cost of tyres and hard ride. I cover 25,000 motorway miles a year and want something better, with a high spec. What do you suggest? I have £25,000 to spend.

You'll get the best mpg in a reasonably powerful car from a BMW F30 320dED, which comes on cheap 205/60 R16 tyres and from which I averaged a genuine 63mpg over 8000 miles.
