Engine malfunction with Jaguar X-Type 2.2 diesel

I own a 2005 Jaguar X-Type 2.2 diesel. After running at motorway speeds for 1.5 hours the glow plug warning light appears, followed by the engine malfunction light. The vehicle then goes into limp home mode.

I can usually resume normal operations by turning on and off the ignition, but the fault keeps occurring. Any ideas what could be wrong?
