Why is the RAC charging so much for replacement batteries?

I phoned the RAC for a quote this morning for a battery for my 2008 BMW 520D Sports Touring. A very pleasant and helpful young lady called Tracy quoted £291.99, fitted for free as I am a member. This seemed rather expensive so I phoned my local battery company, who quoted £89 for an identical battery, again fitted for free. As a member of many years, I have asked the RAC to explain how members are receiving such ridiculously inflated quotes. So far I have not received a reply.

The standard price for batteries is anything up to £100. What you were quoted for an RAC-supplied battery is a far bigger difference than I was previously aware of. Maybe someone made a mistake. If so, they should have admitted to it. I have emailed the head of PR of the RAC for an explanation, but, like you, I have not received a reply.
