Is my Yaris a proper automatic?

I purchased a Toyota Yaris last year and was told it was an automatic, but when chatting with some friends, we all discovered that a car less than 1400cc could not have a proper automatic gearbox. I am told what I have is a semi-automatic (not by the garage) and indeed this would account for the strange feeling on occasions when it seems as if the car is deciding whether to go up or down a gear. Can you please give me any information?

Yaris automatics from 2006 to 2012 were automated manuals. These are standard manual gearboxes and clutches operated by a system of servos and electric motors to emulate a driver changing gear. A peculiarity is that they damp the throttle on upchanges to prevent damage to the transmission and, if the driver tries to overcome this by pressing the accelerator harder, then progress can be in a series of lurches. Previously both the 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre Yaris could be fitted with an automated manual (MMT) or a proper four-speed torque converter auto. The latest (third shape) Yaris is CVT automatic.
