How can we get good trade-in prices for our cars which match our local dealership's?

For thirty years my wife and I have bought and driven Honda cars. Throughout this period we must have bought 25 new cars from the same salesman at the same dealership. They serviced the cars and the trade-in price after 12,000 miles always seemed excellent. On a couple of occasions we went to a Mercedes-Benz dealer and a Volkswagen dealer but their trade in price for our Honda was so much lower we felt trapped. We are not confident of selling privately. How would you advise us to free ourselves from this situation?

If you are happy, why free yourself from this 'trap'? You have an excellent relationship with the dealership and the salesman which means proper 'lifetime care'.
