Which transmission is better - Ford Focus Powershift or Honda Civic torque converter?
I would like to arrange test drives in the Focus Zetec 1.6 Powershift and the new Honda Civic 1.8 Automatic. I would appreciate your opinion on both types of transmission and your advice on how long a reasonable test drive should last, and also whether it is usual to go out on one's own or would the salesman expect to accompany you.

In the first place, it might be difficult to find dealers with demonstrators or secondhand examples of these cars. For insurance purposes you will normally have to be accompanied. The current and previous Civic 1.8i automatic has a 5-speed torque converter automatic transmission - that is the only Civic automatic. The current Focus is available either as a 1.6 125PS petrol model Powershift, or as a 2.0 litre 140PS diesel Powershift. The Getrag/Powershift transmission is similar to a VAG DSG/s-tronic, but is a later development and to my mind works much better. There is no need to brake to shift from N to D and there is no interference from the brake switch when setting off out of a junction or onto a roundabout.
