Buying a small, economical used 4x4?

I want to buy a small, economical used car that is easy to get in and out of, suitable for a large 6 footer and for winter country road driving? Would prefer something that gives a good MPG. Maybe a 4x4 or crossover.

These are contradictory requirements. An SX4 1.6i 2WD or 4WD with cold weather or all season tyres would do part of the job but will still only return 35 - 40mpg.
