Good cheap used car for rough roads

I own a Mercedes ML 2004 and I want something smaller, preferably an estate or hatch back as I have 2 small dogs.

I live down an unmade road with 2 cattle grids, so something with a bit more ground clearance would be good, can you reccomend a good used type of car for for this situation. I do about 20k miles a year. I would like to part-ex my Merc with 60k on clock probably worth £9k. I have £3k to put to it.

Reasonably spacious five-seater with a decent boot, strong and economical diesel, tidy handling in 4WD.
