What smart, cheap car?
I have been used to company provided vehicles of many shades, invariably new (ish) & leased.
Due to a (voluntary) career change, I need something "smart but dirt cheap" - ie anything German, max budget is £4K for now.
How do I get my bargain wheels checked out, is it a vain hope to think I could get 12 to 18 months light 'ish use from something with 100-180,000 on the clock? Should I stay away from diesels completely? Manual or auto?

Basically you are asking for what everyone wants and anything German won't be a bargain because perception values it too highly. You might do better with a Honda Accord 2.2iCTDI.
