Do we go through our insurance?
My wife's car got hit earlier in the week. It was parked, not on the highway and an elderly gentleman reversed out of his garage and hit the car. It was witnessed by my wife and the gentleman asked us to get a quote as he did not wish to go through the insurance.
The quote was £200. When she rang up to tell him he started by suggesting she had parked in the wrong place, that he could not see her and all sorts of other things. He then suggested that she would like to pay 50%, then 25% and has generally got rather unpleasant.
While we are happy to be obliging here I am fairly sure that at the end of the day if you have hit a stationary car with no-one in it then it can not be anything other than your fault.
Is our best bet just to go through the insurance?

Yes. Report it and him to your insurer.
