Which small car to replace a Passat?

My girlfriend's Volkswagen Passat has reached the point where it's no longer economical to repair and she needs to find something smaller, cheaper to tax and insure with low servicing costs. Probably a 2-to-4-year-old hatchback or small estate.

It needs a reasonable size boot to fit her elderly Doberman into, so low gate and flat floor.

She is 6foot1 and has tall passengers (I'm 6foot3 and her son is 6foot4). She commutes 20 miles per day for work so it needs a little bit of pizzazz for overtaking when necessary.

If she's into Volkswagen Audi cars then a Polo, Ibiza or Fabia with the 1.2 diesel engine would do the job. I'd prefer a KIA Rio 1.1 diesel or a Fiesta 1.6 Econetic.
