Is this insurance practice legal?

After a recent accident I made a claim on my car insurance policy. I asked if I could use my preference of vehicle repairer instead of the one nominated the insurance company. They said I could but they would charge me an additional £200 for using my choice of repairer.

Is it legal? Can an insurance company do this? Or do I have the right to choose who repairs my vehicle?

Yes, they can do this if it is a term of the policy. They can't suddenly spring it on you if it was not a term of the policy.
