Battery discharging after ticking noise in engine.

I have a 2005 Diesel Renault Modus. The battery appeared to be flat (i.e. central locking not responding, car not starting). I charged the battery overnight and it started. I ran it for 10 mins. Charge didn't last. Charged it again, got it to garage. Fitted new battery and within 2 days battery appeared to be flat again.

It seems to me the most obvious thing is that the alternator has died but could there be another reason?

Could be the alternator. Or could be something daft like a fault with the interior light 'see you out' dimmer. Try switching the light off altogether.
