Running in 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2Diesel R - In just 600 miles per Handbook?
With my previous car - a 2006 Kia Sorento CRDi XS purchased new, in the absence of advice form the Handbook I ran the engine in over 10k miles following your advice contained within your FAQ section. Thus served the car well and the car burnt no synthetic oil between services despite covering 2k tow miles pa in addition to the 8k miles solo.
I have just traded the vehicle in for a new 62 reg Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 R Diesel and am very pleased with the increased power and torque. I was going to follow the same HJ advice, however having read the page (1-5) in the Handbook, the key advice is: during first 600 miles "keep engine speed between 2,000 rpm and 4,000 rpm", and "do not maintain a single speed for long periods of time, either fast or slow. Varying engine speed is needed to properly run-in the engine."
My question is, is it really possible to run this engine in properly for a long reliable life in just 600 miles. My previous car's engine didn't finally loosen up fully until past 20k miles when oil usage stabilised to zero. Or should I stick to the time-served HJ advice of increasing max revs over a 10k period?
I understand the oil factory filled is Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30. Should I run this for the first year (say 10-12k miles) then replace every 6 months (as done with previous vehicle as tow 1.8T 2-3k miles pa) or should I stick exactly to the service schedule for this more modern diesel engine?
Finally, does this model have a DPF? If so, any known issues or tips on avoiding problems. My daily commute is 15 miles each way on A roads taking 20-25mins, reaching 60mph for two or three minutes at a time?

Revving to 4,000 regularly will loosen it up. Good advice not to maintain steady engine speeds. I'd do what they say, then apply your own common sense, only taking it up to 4,000rpm occasionally, say once a week. Stick to the service schedule as long as that means changing the oil and filter at least once a year and at least once every 10,000 miles. Yes, does have a DPF. But no trouble reported. The same engine has been in the Santa Fe for 3 years and no DPF trouble reported. Your commute should keep it clear anyway. Be interested to hear what mpg you average. I hope 40mpg plus, solo.
