Which should I go for?

I have approximately £5000 to spend on a used car which would be used fairly occaisionally - looking at maybe 10,000 miles per year maximum.

In my current circumstances I can go two weeks without driving but then I could do a spate of 60 mile round trips for a week plus a 600 mile round trip on the motorway every two months or so.

I am also looking at keeping my costs down simply because of the amount of time the car would be sitting around doing nothing!

Would a 1litre petrol (Toyota Aygo) be up to the challenge of the motorway or should I be looking for something more powerful/ diesel?

No problem with motorways as long as you accept it is not a powerful car and you have to drive it in a sensible way, keeping out of the way of faster traffic. I've just had 4 totally reliable years out of a FIAT 500. You might get an 08 500 1.2 Pop with about 40k miles for £5,000.
