Focus gearbox whine
I have just bought a 2002 Ford Focus, 1.6 manual transmission. It has 45k on the clock and is in good superficial condition. The problem that I have is that when idle in neutral an irritating mechanical whine is audible.
The noise disappears when the clutch pedal is pressed in. The noise is audible in the lower gears but not in 3, 4 or 5. The car drives fine, there are no problems finding gear or with the clutch. I would really appreciate your help as the noise is driving me mad and I am concerned it is indicative of a problem which might cost me if not caught in time.

Worn layshaft. You could try a transmission oil change, but wear is wear.
