Toyota Yaris making strange noises - what's the cause?

I have a 2001 Toyota Yaris 1.3 with 154,000 miles on the clock. I recently noticed a different engine noise when in the higher gears; the frequency/sound/tune/vibration of the engine changes from normal smooth running to one that sounds gravelly and harsh.

I took it to the garage to get it serviced and they said it was a wheel bearing, which they replaced along with the fan belt. Over the weekend the noise did not go away so I took it back to the garage today giving them more details of the sound complaining of engine noise - they told me they couldn't hear anything wrong, but it is definitely still there. What could this be?

I think it must be gearbox bearings.
