Noisy Golf transmission
I've been told by my VW mechanic that my 51 plate Golf mk 5 is making a whirling noise that is coming from the main shaft bearing, and would need a gearbox remove and strip. Is the noise something serious that needs immediate attention or more of a nuisance?

VAG tranmissions often do this. It's bearing wear. But I have topped up these boxes with SPTP transmission additive via the speedo drive orifice and run them for years without the problem getting worse. This isn't guaranteed, of course. But it can work for a while.
