Which medium sized car?

I need an economical Golf size car.

1. Needs to be auto.

2. Mileage will 60 mi per day (30mi each way), mainly country side roads... 40-50 mph limit with some city driving at the end (about 3mi each way).

3. We tend to buy new at good discount (Drive the Deal for example) and keep cars for 8-10 years which will take the car to 120,000 - 150,000 mi.

The Golf is the probably the prefered model. The 1.6 TDI Bluemotion DSG a strong contender.

Questions:
1- The diesel seems to be the best choice but over the 8/10 years and 150,000mi, are we better off with the 1.4 TSI (122bhp) DSG? It seems to be a winner and I am wondering if over the ownership period, the diesel will not land us with some horrendous bill.

2- Hyundai i30 and KIA Cee'd auto diesel seem to be good choice too... what do you think?

3- Our main car is a Volvo and the V40 auto D3 could be on the list... certainly like the style and safety feature but it seems expensive.

Any model we have overlooked?

Don't expect a 1.6TDI or a 1.4TSI DSG to last 8 years and 150k miles reliably. At least the KIA is warranted for 7 years and 100,000 miles.
