Disclosing insurance incidents

About 6 months ago I opened the passenger door of my son's car and it tapped the van parked next to it. It only made a tiny dink but the man said he'd have to talk to his company to see if they were going to go through insurance. We didn't hear a thing and assumed he wasn't going to bother claiming so my son didn't inform his insurer (though I suppose he should have).

Anyway what I would like to know is does my son have to go through his insurer or can he insist he pays for the repair himself so that his NCD isn't affected and his premiums don't increase next renewal?

Yes, he has to inform his insurer just in case the other party does and it goes down on his record as a 'non disclosure'.
