Whining noise on pull away

I've had a Ford Mondeo TCDI estate for 7 years. It's a 2004 model. Recently I've noticed a whirring or whinning noise on pull away. It sounds like a turbo type issue, but I've never had this before.

Might be the turbo spooling up. Might be the alternator. Normally a DMF would not whine. Might make the car difficult to start because the starter ring is on the outer flywheel and the timing is taken from it, or you might hear clunks, or you might get slippage. Could be the gearbox.
