After 32 years of driving a Volvo 945 can you recommend an alternative?
We have driven our current Volvo 945 for 18 years and our previous Volvo 945 for 14 year. Our sons tell us we don't need such a big car at our age (73). I have driven smaller hired cars on holiday in Spain but never feel safe. We do not use the car very much for every day use but do want to continue on our long annual trip to Spain. I am used to the turbo with this model which we didn't have with the previous version. We also need to be able to transport grandchildren's bikes. We could not imagine managing without a reasonably sized estate. 2 dealerships I visited told me we can only get a V50 diesel but having read your column I got the impression this could cause problems. No part exchange required. We are not mechanically minded and have no knowledge of modern cars. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Hard to beat a Mondeo Estate. Big, reliable, and with a useful choice of engines. The 1.6 Ecoboost 160 petrol turbo does 40+ mpg, which is brilliant for such a big car. The 115PS 1.6 TDCI should so about 48mpg.
