Which family MPV will be reliable and has room for three adults in the back seats?
Our 12-year-old Renault Kangoo is now on its last legs, our Hyundai i20 is too small as a main family car for two adults and three growing kids, and we no longer need two cars. I love the cavernous boot of the Kangoo but not, unfortunately, its reliability. Street cred is of absolutely no importance to us, nor are "bells and whistles" (air con would be a plus but isn't essential). The really important things are reliability and economy.
We're happy to part exchange both cars plus up to £8000 (preferably less) for a car up to a couple of years old but no more, and would be looking to keep it until the end of its life, by which time our kids will all be adult size so the back seat needs to accommodate three adults. As my mum lives with us an optional sixth seat would be a bonus, but it's not essential by any means. We only do up to 10,000 miles/year and probably not in long enough journeys to have a diesel. The only cars I would definitely not have, for personal reasons, are Volkswagen and Skoda. What would you recommend?

If you want to avoid diesel you can get a Citroen Berlingo Multispace with the chain cam 95PS 1.6 VTI petrol engine for £12,800, list. If you want greater economy and don't mid the risk of replacing timing belts, turbos, dual mass flywheels, EGRs and diesel particulate filters you could go for the 1.6HDI. Alternatively you might like to consider a Dacia Duster 2WD SUV, from just £8995 for the 105PS 1.6i base 'Access' version without a/c, radio or even a spare wheel. (A spare is a £50 optional extra). Later this year there will also be a Dacia Logan MCV estate from £6995.
