Buying an Isuzu D-max pick up

We are planning to trade-in our trusty, much-used Isuzu Denver Rodeo (2004) for a new Isuzu D-Max pick up. We need the vehicle for daily road/track driving in the Northumberland hills, a small amount of off-road work and towing a 2-horse trailer. We currently have a manual pick-up but our other car is auto and to be honest we both prefer the automatic now. My questions are: auto or manual (especially for towing), 16-inch or 17-inch wheels?

Automatic pick-ups are generally sluggish and nasty. I'd stick to manual, especially because the old and new D-Max and Colorado have a really good gearbox and nice gearshift. More balloon effect with 16-inch, but with leaf rear springs and a solid rear axle it's still going to be a bouncy ride.
