I bought a car that was previously written off

I purchased a car and found some steering faults with it,

I traced a previous owner to learn some history and he informed me the vehicle had been written off two years previously, it appears the insurance company failed to register this fact.

I brought this to their attention and they state this will now be corrected. Do I have any redress with the insurance company? Had I known this was a write off I would not have purchased it.

No. A car can be written off as a Class D or even Class C then fixed and, after it passes a VOSA test, be put back on the road. You never had any contract with the insurer anyway so never had any rights against it.
