Sat nav doesn't recognise UK post codes

I bought a new Skoda Superb estate in July 2000. I very soon learned that the sat nav would not accept a full six digit post code.

I have been told by the dealer that there is no free software update and it will cost me £175.00 to change the software to allow a full six digit input. Is there any way around this please?

UK postcodes are 7 digit, not 6. The UK is the only country in the world with 7 digit postcodes, which is why so many satnavs do not accommodate them. But £175 for the upgrade is the same you would have to pay for a Tom Tom that already took 7 digit postcodes. I think the dealer is being sufficiently reasonable here that a small claims case might fail.
