My 2009 Honda Insight hybrid, bought from and serviced by the local Honda dealer (I've been buying from Honda dealers and servicing with them for over 25 years) suffered a mishap that even baffled Honda. I was transporting a demijohn of wine in my boot and braked sharply when a car swerved in front of me. The demijohn toppled and wine leaked into the boot. Two days later, the car started to behave erratically, the electrics operating intermittently, then it failed to start. I called Hondacare who arranged car rental for me when they were unable to fix the problem. The battery compartment under the boot had become flooded with wine, so the car was transported to my local Honda garage. Honda has informed me that the parts and labour are not covered by the warranty (which is effective until July 2012) and that the expense to me will be over £1,300. I noticed after the wine spill, that the tool cavity under the boot was not flooded, which suggests that it is properly sealed, while the adjacent battery cavity did not seem to be sealed as the wine leaked into it. Does this suggest a manufacturer's fault - in which case is it covered by the warranty? If I can’t make a warranty claim can I make an insurance claim under my comprehensive car insurance?

No. You do not have a legitimate warranty claim. The dealer might apply to Honda for some goodwill, but that is as far as it can go. You damaged the car. The fact that the battery compartment was not sealed against liquid spills from above is not a design fault. It's just the way the car is. A Toyota Auris HSD is the same. You may have ‘accidental’ cover under your insurance. Check the policy.
