Spares deportment

You frequently recommend buying a set of 4 steel wheels fitted with winter tyres for use from October to March in the UK. What should be done about the spare wheel? I know it's dangerous to mix normal year round tyres with winter tyres, so what happens if a wheel change is needed? Would a normal spare tyre in the boot result in an MOT failure if winter tyres were fitted to the car?

Most new cars don't have a spare wheel. And most of those that do have a space saver. For emergency use, a space saver or a normal size summer tyre is fine as long as you restrict your maximum speed to 50mph and are aware that braking distances will be much greater. A car does not need a spare tyre for an MoT.
