I currently have a 2005 Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0 Litre diesel with DSG gearbox. Car has been faultless and I have experienced none of the reported "hesitation" with the 6-speed wet DSG box. Now time to change car and am looking to downsize a little (not tiny though) and because I do less than 10,000 miles PA I think a petrol model would be better than as diesel with a DPF.
I need an automatic. My wife has a back problem so needs seats with longer squabs to give her some support under her knees, heated seats are even better (current Octavia is the L&K model with all the toys). You suggested a Honda Jazz 1.4 CVT - we tested one and it is a great car but my wife found the seat uncomfortable because the seat squab was so short.
Then she sat in a Golf Match and thought the seats were better because the squab was longer and supported her under the knees - hope to test drive the Match 1.4TSI 122 DSG if the dealer can locate one. You then suggested the Mazda 2 auto and, hopefully, we can test drive one of those. My wife then suggested the Skoda Yeti 1.2 TSI 105 DSG, but I am concerned that 1.2 is a small engine for such a square vehicle and that I suspect petrol consumption will be high, especially on the motorway. I’m trying to arrange a test drive but I fear that the waiting time will be ridiculous for a new one to my spec.
The new Ford Focus looks nice but they don't do a Powershift petrol - just a diesel in top spec. Anyway, does the Powershift have the same hesitancy as some reports of the VW DSG box?

No, the Getrag/Ford Powershift is much better than a DSG. I have used and deliberately abused them and they have remained perfect. No complaints from any readers either, and they have now been out there for more than 3 years in the Focus and C-Max. No complaints of DPF problems in the 2.0TDCI in Fords either. Another possibility for you is the run out model Honda Civic 1.8i with 5-speed torque converter box. And I'm currently testing the new KIA Rio. That has long squabs and there is a 1.4 automatic. You could also add the KIA Venga, Hyundai ix20 and Nissan Note 1.6 autos to your list.
