Dipso Disco

We currently own one of the first 2004 diesel Discovery 3s (on off road tyres) and a 2003 5-door petrol VW Golf Match. The Discovery is averaging 21mpg, which makes frequent weekend trips from London to Axminster on the Devon border, ridiculously expensive.

We've been taking the VW to save money, but only just squeeze in with baby plus associated paraphenalia. Another baby is already on the way, and I'm wondering whether there actually is a 4x4 that is kinder on the pocket, but can still be used for proper off roading when shooting and fishing. Or is it time to opt for a more sensible estate car? We'd be looking for a used car with low mileage.

I got 45mpg out of the latest model Mitsubishi Outlander 2.2 4WD, which uses the same engine as the Range Rover Evoque and handles very well indeed for an SUV.
