How can I reduce insurance premiums for my 18-year-old son?

I am at a loss at how to proceed. My 18 year-old son has just passed his driving test and no matter which approach I take, quotes are starting at around £4,000pa. I have tried multi-car policies (three vehicles) and included myself (over 50) as a second driver. Third party instead of fully comprehensive makes the quote more expensive, believe it or not. Some of my friends appear to be “fronting” their children’s insurance, which means the main driver is said to be the parent, however it is actually the son or daughter who is covering the majority of the miles.

Is there any reasonable policy out there, which will allow young people on the road between the ages of 17 – 22 years without charging these current rates? Can they be insured to drive only within daylight hours or have a speed restrictor put on the engine. My son’s car is a Y-registered 1124 cc Peugeot, 35,000 miles on the clock.

I met a mother who went for a 'Pay How You Drive' black box telematics scheme that cuts premiums by monitoring driving: www.co-operativeinsurance.co.uk/youngdriver . She got her 17-year-old son's insurance for under £600 as a named driver on her policy. To avoid being accused of fronting she has to drive the car regularly herself. And ironically, because all driving of the car is monitored, she has to drive it as carefully as her son.
