Why is our Land Rover Freelander 2 returning just 32mpg?

We purchased a brand new Freelander 2 MY2011 TD4 manual three months ago. Against a claimed combined fuel consumption figure of 45.2mpg, we are getting an average of 32.1mpg. We live in the country and a lot of our mileage is covered on dual carriageway. On a recent test, it returned 37mpg on the A34 whilst averaging 60mph for 35 miles - some 50 per cent less than the claimed figure for similar conditions.

Land Rover is investigating the problem but there is nothing immediately apparent. We know it's not just our car as our current courtesy Freelander 2 returns a similarly dire figure. Indeed, it averaged nine mpg this morning on a 4-mile run to the next village - on normal roads. So much for being eco. And please don’t dismiss it as our driving style. We previously averaged 40mpg in a C220 CDi auto over 35,000 miles before we swapped it and I average 39mpg in my 2007 CLK 320 CDi Sport auto. We have already written to the dealership rejecting the vehicle under the terms of the Sale of Goods Act. Oh, and we had to write to Colin Green to get the dealership to take any action.

Not a "claimed combined fuel consumption figure". This is the official EC certified figure, which is the only figure the manufacturer and the dealer are allowed by EC law to divulge. The fact that it bears no relation to real life seems to be totally lost on the EC commissioners who made this the law, which is why we have launched the Real Life Fuel Economy Register at www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/ to allow every driver to register their real economy and provide a reliable average economy figure. That said, I did manage to average 45mpg over 700 miles in a Mitsubishi Outlander 4WD with the same engine.
