In which year were particulate filters first fitted to diesel engines in cars? My 5,000pa mileage is made up of short runs of 5 miles each way and longer runs of 125miles each way about 6 times a year. My current vehicle is a Volvo V40 petrol, 1800cc manual. I now need an automatic because of an arthritic knee.

The Volvo V50 petrol automatic is 2,400cc. The vehicle is the right size but I feel the engine is too big for me. My thoughts were that a "pre-particulate" diesel might suit but I would welcome your advice and suggestions.
