Risk action
My son is looking to renew his car insurance. He will be 18 in February. He passed his test 6 months ago, and got his car when he was 17, so now has 1 year no claims. He also took his Pass Plus test, but it seems to make little difference this year. His car is low mileage, but only worth about £700, and the cheapest quote we can get for 3rd party is £1,500. This is ridiculous. I know there are lots of young drivers having accidents, but how are they meant to build up no claims? And why are girls so much cheaper than lads? I know lots of young drivers and a few have had accidents already, but the girls seem worse than the boys. Do you have any suggestions on who can give us a cheap quote? I think he may have to sell his car, he wouldn’t be using it after September anyway, as he will be going to university, so anyone who insures for 6 or 9 months could be an option. Any help would be appreciated.

Young driver insurance based on telematics of driver behaviour and in monthly instalments: www.Insurethebox.com ; or www.co-operativeinsurance.co.uk/youngdriver . Young driver car and insurance packages of standard rate PCPs, but insurance for 17 year olds from £300 for 9 months followed by a 40% NCD: www.youngmarmalade.co.uk . Young driver insurance to drive the family car up to IG16/20 at £90.95 to £99.50 a month according to postcode: www.provisionalmarmalade.co.uk . Young Driver Insurance: A policy suited to 17-25 year old, discounted by up to 40% as the car must not be driven between 11pm and 5am: www.i-kube.co.uk . In another barmy decision, The European Court of Justice recently ruled that insurers could not discriminate against males in favour of females. I guess the next thing it will do is rule that insurers cannot discriminate against young drivers in favour of older drivers, or indeed underwrite any risk on the basis of risk.
