Why doesn't my Hyundai ix35 achieve anywhere near its quoted mpg figure?

I bought a Hyundai ix35 4wd diesel manual at the end of October. We are delighted with the car except for its fuel consumption. When we first had it and it was running in I did not expect any reasonable figures, even though I was not using any revs. It has not produced anything like the figures quoted even though we have now done 2,000 miles. I realise that the severe weather over November and December meant I could not expect good fuel economy. However, all through November and December we have not got more that 34mpg overall. The quoted figures are 42.2 urban, 55.4 Extra urban, 49.6 combined. According to ‘What Car’, it is 47.9 overall.

I took it to the garage that supplied it last Friday to have it checked. They returned it saying that all the settings were correct. I said that this was not good enough as it was supposed to perform better than this. I do understand that I will not achieve the figures quoted by the manufacturer as they are done under very special circumstances, but I should surely get within 10 per cent of them. My other car and previous cars have all done more or less what the manufacturer claimed.

We had the coldest November/December weather for 20 years, meaning that engines took far longer to reach running temperature, so it is not surprising that fuel economy suffered during this period. My own was 10 per cent down. But I agree that the race to achieve lowest possible CO2, on which taxation is based (and on the average of which manufacturers will be fined from 2013), real life economy has been left further behind. All a manufacturer has to do is optimise ‘sample’ cars for the prescribed EC Tests to achieve low CO2 and consequently high mpg. And the EC still insists that these are the only figures quoted by manufacturers and dealers. However, it is one thing to say these are the EC test figures. It is quite another to say the car you buy “will achieve” these figures. And that should be the basis for any legal action anyone attempts to take against a dealer.
